A Great Special Collections Blog: Hyde Collection Catablog

Last week, I learned about the Hyde Collection Catablog by John Overholt, which focuses on a large Samuel Johnson collection donated to Harvard University’s Houghton Library a few years ago. John writes in his description of the blog:

"As the cataloger of the printed book portion of the collection, I have the privilege of examining each book in the collection, and I will be using this blog to share some of my discoveries."

The blog includes snippets of some of the works he’s discovered. The scans of the books are incredibly detailed and include some image of the paper, too. I find that quite impressive. And don’t worry: he’s posting images with the permission of the library and has copyright notices posted on each. His colleagues know about the blog. I think it’s a great way to do outreach for that collection, Houghton Library, and the work of a cataloger. He mentioned that some people have already contacted Houghton Library about the collection after finding his weblog.

I also think it’s great that he’s another Harvard librarian blogging on Harvard’s server. Weblogs as networking tools and all that~
