Upcoming Stuff of Note

So, uh, Hello.

I planned to be offline for a day and ended up not being able to get online for most of the weekend. My apologies for those of you who were hoping to find something interesting here during the long weekend and to those of you overly worried by my recent question about death threats at work. (Don’t worry, Mom: I’m fine. Really, I am.)

I see the trackback spammers didn’t realize it was a holiday weekend and they should have been out playing instead of piling their crap on people’s blogs. The comment spammers, however, did take the weekend off. Hooray! I’ll keep chipping away at the detritus.

The fun thing about being offline for a few days is watching the spam pile up in e-mail accounts. I checked 3 e-mails accounts this morning already. Yahoo! had about 220 total e-mails with 3 legitimate e-mails. My personal account had 211 with 15 real e-mails. Gmail had 1 real e-mail and nothing else. Goes to show there’s a lot to be said about not giving away e-mail addresses, perhaps, and the good things people say about Gmail. If you’ve sent me something and I haven’t responded in a day or two, you might want to resend it just in case it got intertwined with some spam I deleted.

My hands aren’t shaking from being away from the computer as much as some of you might think they would be. What I missed the most was not having access to music or a radio.

Anyway …

It looks like I’ll be the guest speaker at Thursday’s blog group. Erica and I have been way too busy these last few weeks to try to fill the hole in the schedule with a special guest. I’ll give a draft of the introduction to wikis talk I’ll give at the Special Libraries Association Annual Conference on Monday, June 12. (That’s a good thing because I’m way behind in preparing it. I was supposed to have a draft to the panel a few weeks ago. I wrote an outline this past week, then left it on my desk. Since I ended up not having any computer time this weekend, it doesn’t really matter anyway. I’m behind in everything these days, especially since I’ve been offline. What information would like want to know about me in an introduction before you listen to me speak?) So, if you want to learn about wikis, drop by, join the Webcast (if it’s available), hop on IRC, etc., etc. Details about the group are on Thursday Meetings at Berkman. I haven’t had a chance to post the agenda yet.

Don’t forget about BarCamp in Maynard, Massachusetts, this Saturday and Sunday–a geek gathering with lots of geeking out. The organizers and some participants have asked specifically for librarians/information professionals/archivists, etc., to be there. It even fits in our budget: it’s free. I think they’re target number of participants is 150. They were at 120 this morning with a few maybes. Sign up soon.

Jill wrote in to point out that there is a blogger gathering at SLA coordinated by the Information Technology Division’s Blogging Section. Details: Monday, June 12, 1:30-3:30 pm at Edgar’s Billiards Club & Restaurant “between the Baltimore Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency on the Baltimore Inner Harbor Skywalk, above Pratt and Light streets.” Details on the post linked above. Thanks so much for pointing that out, Jill!

I’m not sure I can make it because I will have just finished talking about wikis (There’s irony there, isn’t there?) and I’m expecting to stay a bit after the session to answer lots of questions.

(Did I know the IT Division has a place for bloggers? It’s almost a year old now. Hhhmmm … Time to join another division?)
