Combatting Trackback Spam

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

As I’m digging back through blog posts elminating the build up of Trackback spam, I’m thinking way too much about Trackback.
If about 90% of Trackbacks are spam and only about 10% are legitimate, is it worth having Trackback on this weblog?
Having software that manages Trackbacks better would be awesome. I wish Manila handled them similar [...]

BarCamp Boston Seeks Librarians/Info. Pros. for Free Unconference, 6/3-4, Maynard, MA

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

Shimon Rura, developer of voo2do and Frassle, who’s involved in BarCamp Boston, e-mailed me to ask if I could encourage librarians/archivists/information professionals/etc. and others to participate.
A free unconference during the weekend of June 3-4 at Monster Worldwide in Maynard, Massachusetts, BarCamp encourages collaboration, networking, and sharing. All registrants must participate–perhaps by making a formal presentation, [...]

Death Threats at Work

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

I’ll admit these are rather odd questions.
Do any of you get death or other kinds of threats at work? If so, how do you deal with them?
If you don’t feel comfortable answering online, feel free to tell me via e-mail. This is mostly for my own curiosity.
(Don’t worry, Mom, I’m fine. Love you!)

The Seattle Times Looks at Unshelved

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

The Seattle Times lifts the cover off Unshelved to tell us about the comic about working in a public library. Of its 30,000 readers, I wonder how many are public librarians and how many are not librarians at all.

OneWebDay Brainstorm, John Harvard’s in Harvard Sq, 5/9, 7 pm

Monday, May 8th, 2006

I think some of you Internet fans might be interested in OneWebDay. A holiday honoring the Internet, it will be celebrated for the first time this September 22. On Tuesday, May 9, at 7 pm, a group is gathering at John Harvard’s Brew House in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, to brainstorm about ways to celebrate. [...]

Invasion of TrackBack Spam and Funky Characters

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

I noticed the scratchpad is collecting TrackBack spam right now like belly buttons collect lint. There’s no way I can comb through the thousands of posts here to get rid of the spam. Manila doesn’t ping me when I get new TrackBacks and it doesn’t provide a way to view new TrackBacks like it does [...]

Beyond Broadcast Conference and Dan Gillmor at Blog Group

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

For a few weeks now, we’ve known Dan Gillmor would be the guest at Thursday’s blog group (5/11). I’ve done a very poor job of promoting his appearance. The discussion, naturally, will be about citizen journalism. Perhaps we can get him to talk a bit about blogging for the San Jose Mercury News.
Dan will be [...]

SLA 2006 Conference Blog

Friday, May 5th, 2006

The Special Libraries Association has a blog for the 2006 Annual Conference. As you might imagine, people will be sharing information about the conference there. One post worth noting contains information about gettiing to downtown Baltimore from the airport. The Maryland Chapter is also sharing info worth a look on their blog.
Once again, I [...]

More presentations on the horizon: SLA and Wikimania

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

It won’t surprise many of you to learn I’ll be presenting at the SLA 2006 Annual Conference since I’ve done that several times in the past. This year, I’m on a panel about wikis called Newsroom Wikis: Wiki Applications in the Newsroom on Monday morning, June 12. I’m giving the “what is a wiki and [...]

Talk of the Nation Explores Online Identities

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

The National Public Radio show Talk of the Nation spends almost 40 minutes with Internet experts like former Wonkette Ana Marie Cox and David Weinberger exploring online identities. A caller shares her story of deciding not to hire a particular nanny after finding disagreeable content on her weblog. The contributors warn about the longevity of [...]
