Adium: a Messaging Program
One of my friends convinced me to try Adium, an instant messaging program for Mac OS X that’s compatible with many other IM services. He really likes it because it does encrypted chat. I like the duck. Uh, seriously, though I really like the way it logs chats. When I start chatting with someone, I can see what we last talked about. This feature works especially well for me because my machine crashes frequently. It’s nice not to lose a conversation thread just because my machine panicked. I also like how it groups all of the chats in one window. If I’m on chat, I’m frequently talking to multiple people at the same time. With other clients, multiple chats often means I end up with at least 2 chat windows spread around my desktop, sometimes as many as ten windows. That can get rather confusing and tricky at times, especially if I keep moving away from the chat program to do other things on this machine. Having one window is great.

I use GAIM on my PC at work and my Linux box at home, which has the same ability to log chats. I agree that it’s great. I used to compulsively save my chats to my hard drive — now I don’t have to. I even tracked down where they’re stored on the linux machine, and was once able to log in remotely to retrieve a piece of info. someone had messaged me with.
Not sure if it’s available for Mac, but I assume it is. Being a bit lazy, I’m still using iChat on my laptop…

You know, everyone says great things about Gaim. I looked into using it a while ago, but didn’t see that it was Mac OS X compatible. Now I see that it claims to be. Hhhmmm …

I have been using Adium for ages now… best IM client ever, often nicer to use than GAIM anyway. In many ways Adium is the GAIM for Macs.
