Banned Books Week Reading: Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey
I finished The Adventures of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Novel by Dav Pilkey today. This book is my first official Banned Books reading for this week. I can see why parents object to it. The book has a lot of mischief in it, including a number of school pranks, and features a character who runs around in "tighty whitey" underwear and a cape. I didn’t notice anyone giving me a funny look because of the book’s cover. I found the story quite amusing and laughed out loud several times. I even told my penpal he needed to read the book because it might appeal to him. He’s a big comic book and superhero fan. Pilkey pokes fun at various superheros and villains in this book, as in this description of Captain Underpants:
"’Most superheroes look like they’re flying around in their underwear,’ [George] said. ‘Well, this guy actually is flying around in his underwear.’"
It’s a quick read: big type and lots of pictures.
