Updates to What University Communications Offices are Doing with Blogs and Feeds

Monday, September 18th, 2006

For a presentation I’m giving Tuesday, I spent some time updating and revisiting my list of what university communications offices are doing with blogs and feeds. It doesn’t look like too much has changed. The list is still selective, not comprehensive.

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

Larry Sanger, who played a role in the early days of Wikipedia, has a new project called Citizendium, "’citizens’ compendium of everything,’ will be an experimental new wiki project that combines public participation with gentle expert guidance." More info about it is floating around.

iPod Owners Use of iTunes

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

"Digital music purchasing has not yet fundamentally changed the way in which digital music customers buy music."

From Slashdot to the BBC to Jupiter Research, I traced a trail of information to learn about a report saying iPod owners are more likely to get their music from CDs–either CDs they already own or CDs they purchase–than […]

Google Highlights Banned Books

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

Google has a section in their books site for banned books, along with links to more information about banned and challenged books from the American Library Association. Don’t be like me and forget that September 23-30 is Banned Books Week. I recently came across the list of books I was looking for last year. Maybe […]

Mac Laptop Battery Recall

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Apple was kind enough to e-mail me about their recall of computer batteries. I had been checking their site periodically to try to find information about the recall, but I hadn’t found their materials yet. I just bought a new battery a few months ago. Maybe I should have waited since it qualifies for their […]

The Batmobile!

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Batgirl is a librarian, so this post isn’t too far of a stretch, is it?
Autoblog, a popular blog about automobiles, has a bit about the Batmobile. It’s really awesome.
Thanks, Lincoln!

Ask.com to Allow Non-Alphanumeric Characters

Monday, September 11th, 2006

Gary wrote to me to say the search engine Ask.com now allows some non-alphanumeric characters in their searches. Especially of note is that they’re providing definitions of some smiley faces. I like Ask’s instant definitions, particularly those related to chat abbreviations. I often start those searches in Ask and move elsewhere if I can’t find […]

Google News Archive Search

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

Garrett highlights Google News Archive Search in his weekly Library News and Notes. I tinkered with it quickly to try to find some information about Steve Irwin’s death. (I’m catching up on some of the news I’ve missed while offline.) The list of years and publications on the sidebar is nice. I wonder why there’s […]
