Internet Librarian: Mary Ellen Bates: 30 Search Tips
For years, I have heard colleagues rave about Mary Ellen Bates’ presentations at the Special Libraries Association Annual Conference. This talk is the first time I’ve gone to hear her. Her sessions often fill to overflowing at SLA and there are so many other great sessions, I usually attend something else. She’s great. Everything I’ve heard about her talks is true. She works for Bates Information Services.
I missed most of her talk because I was dealing with wireless access issues and then trying to catch up on my live blogging.
Ooops … her session just ended. I’ll post highlights later.
Later: She shared a lot of powerful search tips, including giving us examples of specialized search engines and searching tips.
It’s possible to search for synonyms in Google by using a tilde (~).
Some of the tools she mentioned include Exalead, Eurekster, and several more Chris Sherman mentioned.
While Bates was talking about Wikipedia, I realized some of the people here have a very different attitude about the site than many of my colleagues. I can’t remember now what exactly she said about it, but it was positive.
Like Sherman, she mentioned Kosmix.
