Upcoming Events at Berkman: Lunches w/ Gillmor, Williams, and MacKinnon; Open Source Journalism w/ Rosen

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society has some really cool upcoming events worth noting for those of you interested in journalism, citizen journalism, and such. This Tuesday, November 7, the Luncheon Series features Dan Gillmor and Lisa Williams.* Lisa is going to be talking more about her project involving blogs connected to geographic places. Next week’s series features Rebecca MacKinnon. That lunch might be the last one we’ll see Rebecca at for a while. All lunches require an rsvp from those people planning to be present and eat so the Berkman Center staff can plan food accordingly. Please rsvp by Monday noonish EST to rsvp @ cyber.law.harvard.edu. (My apologies for the late note about this Tuesday’s lunch. For some reason, I didn’t think to post a note about it until this evening.) The lunches are usually Webcast and available via Second Life. Folks also usually hang out in the berkman IRC channel on freenode.net.

I noticed a talk by Jay Rosen next Monday, November 13, at 4 pm titled “Open Source Journalism and Rise of a Pro-Am Press.” A journalism professor at New York University, Jay is an amazing thinker who does a bit with the intersection between journalism and new media. I met him a few years ago at a blog conference. He is highly regarded in many circles. I’m excited to learn he’ll be here next week.

Addenda: Tuesday’s (11/7) lunch is at capacity. Berkman can’t accommodate any more on-site participants.

David Weinberger organized a Web of Ideas talk Wednesday at 7 pm called Taste and the Aesthetics of Design. He’ll explore Paul Graham’s idea that “… successful design, from math to software to painting, relies on the same aesthetic principles. Taste is therefore not a matter of subjectively appreciating fine works but is a required capability for creating great software.”

*(Learning the Lessons of Nixon, oh my, is an incredibly powerful read today. I don’t recommend reading the entries while waiting for a guest to arrive for a radio interview. Now, all I want to do is take some tissues and go down to the river. I’m so glad I did what I did about two weeks ago and what I did about two months ago to complete some of my life’s goals with my parents. Maybe I will call them tonight …)
