Lisa Williams on Placeblogs & Citizen Journalism
Lisa Williams’ Berkman Luncheon Series talk today reminded me of the presentation she gave at blog group recently about a site she’s working on called Placeblogger. It’s a collection of blogs about places—like someone writing about a city, town, or neighborhood. She has some shots of it via Flickr, since the site is not live yet. It’s an attempt to provide better access to blogs by place because it isn’t very easy to get lists of blogs by location. It’s also an attempt to figure out if there are more than 1,000 location-based weblogs. It’s pretty cool! Lisa uses OPML (outline processor markup language) to make it easy to share lists of geographic blogs.
One of the things she said that I thought was really cool is about how when she first started coming to blog group, she found inspiration in those bloggers covering the 2004 presidential campaign. I was tempted to write a little bit here about some political blogging activities I know about today, but I decided not to. Who isn’t sick of political news right now? (Well, ok, maybe not you, but many of us are.)

What a great idea, especially for news librarians. I’ve been trying to put together a list of local blogs for our newsroom to keep up with for a while, but have run into lots of problems trying to track them down. I can’t wait for this site to go live!
