Consumer Technologies Invade Work
This Economist article examines how people are using tools traditionally thought of as consumer tools, not corporate tools, in the workforce. They include technologies such as Web-based e-mail accounts with lots of storage, instant messaging, and voice-over-IP services. The article begins by talking about arrangements Arizona State University has made with Google through Google Apps for Your Domain and how the university is using iTunes.
Since I know some of you are considering whether to us instant messaging at work, I’ll share this quote with you:
“Consumer technologies such as IM usually make employees more productive, says Kailash Ambwani, FaceTime’s boss, so IT bosses should concentrate not on stopping them but on making them secure.”
