The scratchpad gets a new platform

For a really long time, I’ve been procrastinating moving the scratchpad from Manila to WordPress. Harvard made the switch from Manila to WordPress many months ago and it’s been up to us with established blogs to move our content over. I realized a few days ago, I now have a deadline to make the move and get things running, so why wait. Besides, it’s my Frassle* blogiversary. It’s going to take a long time for me to get things up and running properly here. I appreciate your patience!

An archive of j’s scratchpad is at: http://blogs-manila.law.harvard.edu/jkba….

*Some of you who have been following the scratchpad for a while might remember that Frassle is the platform Shimon Rura designed and on which I used to work.

Addenda: Cool! I can get comments via e-mail again! W00t!

The immediate downside of this migration is that I can’t log into the archive of the scratchpad to make a number of necessary changes or to start checking and moving content over. There’s a lot that didn’t get migrated or that needs to be fixed. A lot of the admin links, like the login button, didn’t automatically update to the new blogs-manila URL and since I’m not logged in, I can’t make the appropriate changes to fix things and get them working. Maybe someone knows a kludge that might help me, but I don’t know one right now and can’t take the time to figure it out.

I wish I could customize these colors better. We only have a few themes from which to choose and I don’t really like any of them. I actually can’t read the text color on my screen, but I like the Frasslesque colors.

Oh, and remember all those nasty comment spam attacks I’d been getting? The import brought in the spam I’ve been deleting on Manila. Manila doesn’t actually delete comments permanently. Now, I get to do it all over again. But WordPress only lets me see 100 comments at a time unless I do a search. How can I search for spam? There are thousands of them. I think this blog is just going to have to be filled with spam because there’s no obvious way I can delete all of the comments. Fun!

*takes 10 deep breaths and remembers that there’s oh so much more to life than blogging and tech problems*

2/5: So, I, um decided to ignore my blog problems during a very busy, hectic, and full weekend. Today, Kim helped me figure out how to log into the old Manila blog, so I can make some important changes there. I think I’m going to do some fun experiments there, like figuring out what other forms don’t work anymore and whether the backup script is similarly broken.

Can I just say thank you, Kim, and thank you, Tamper Data?

There’s a delay when I type this comment, but otherwise, very spiffy!

    congrats on the migration!

Wow! You two are very fast. I was hoping no one would notice, especially while I work out a number of nasty problems with this migration. Migrating wasn’t going to be smooth, but I didn’t expect some of the major problems I’ve encountered.

Congratulations on the nearly new blog. :)
