Proposed WHOIS Data Change Could Enhance Privacy, Thwart Researchers
Many Internet site owners dislike having their contact information appear in various WHOIS registries. Hearings about some proposed privacy changes happen next week in Lisbon, Spain. The primary Internet address oversight agency, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) will hold hearings on the issue. A proposal gives people the option of listing third-party contact information. While that might protect people’s privacy and bring registry policies into alignment with European privacy law, it will make finding a site owner’s real contact information more challenging for law enforcement officials, news researchers, and others.
