the world according to xkcd

The online comic xkcd put together a map indicating the size of online communities. Like the disclaimer says, it’s based on the best knowledge available, but not necessarily accurate knowledge. Thanks, James, for the link.

Unfortunately, someone stole xkcd creator Randall Munroe’s laptop while he was sleeping. I had another close brush with hard drive bad foo earlier this week. Reading his post inspired me to start another round of searching for a firewire cable that’ll link two Macs together for faster backups or another way to do quick and easy and frequent backups. A friend of mine recently had his ASUS Z71V machine stolen in a break in. (If you see it or would like more info, please drop me a line–comments or jkbaumga [at] some major free Internet e-mail service.) I think I might just sleep with mine under my pillow from now on.

By the way, Randall is scheduled to give a talk at MIT on Monday, May 14.

(I know I’m shooting myself in the foot by telling you this because it’s going to sell out and fill up early and I really want to get in, but, well, I would have felt guilty had I not mentioned it. And besides, since Kim usually feeds me xkcd comics, he didn’t feed me the one mentioned above, and he doesn’t live anywhere near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology—on the wrong side of the pond, even!—I feel justified in mentioning the event here as a way to tease him about how fabulous life within a short commute of such wonderful places as MIT can be.)
