Lubuto Library Project
Often when we think about special librarians, we think about their work in corporations, academic settings, and specialized libraries. One Special Libraries Association award recipient works on a project with a very touching impact. Jane Kinney Meyers is building libraries in Africa through the Lubutor Library Project to help children who have lost parents because of AIDS and other street children. During the awards bit, we viewed images of her reading stories to the children, people visiting the collections, and the construction of a new library building. Once, she received a surprise donation of about 1,000 books. Not only do these children not have access to schools, she explained, but often no adult other than herself will spend time with the children. She’s an inspiration. Many people gave her a standing ovation.

The project brought a few tears to people’s eyes, I think. Very moving. The standing O that she received was truly spontaneous and health-felt, the way a standing O is meant to be.
