M dashes in taglines break WordPress’ feeds

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

I understand a few of you had problems receiving j’s scratchpad’s feed on Thursday, June 21. I put some m dashes in the quote I used from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Apparently, they were enough to blank the XML feed WordPress produces.
I believe it was the m dashes (—, 'mdash;) because it was the […]

Getting to a computer that won’t quite boot

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

I realize some of you might be interested in knowing what I’m doing with my computer that won’t quite boot. A few years ago when I had a similar problem, a geek taught me the basics of what I’m doing now. An article from MacWorld describes the basics and how to do a little more […]

Grazr: Another way to display XML feeds

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

I don’t think I’ve ever written about Grazr in this space before, regardless of how long I’ve known about it or the fact that a friend of mine is a champion of the tool. He gave me a detailed demo, which makes me want to pull writing about it off the backburner and into reality. […]

Murphy’s Law & My Computer

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Here we go again. I finally had five minutes to catch up on some posts and my computer stopped booting all the way. I’ve been procrastinating getting a broken CD drive fixed, so I can’t boot from a CD. I dashed out to buy a Firewire cable, hooked the box up to another machine, booted […]

The Need for Geographical Tags

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

The weblog MediaShift has a really cool interview with Lisa Williams of Placeblogger and H20town about the need for geographical tags. Using geography as a criteria to find information can be incredibly useful. It’s something many of us would like to do on a daily basis, from learning about a great new local restaurant to […]

On Becoming a Wikipedia Activist

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Garrett sent me a link to an AlterNet piece where Annalee Newitz tells her tale of what made her become a Wikipedia activist and why. Apparently, deletion can do more than just erase articles and history.
Thanks, Garrett!
