Librarians and Bud Vases
Shimon shared an article with me about the bud vase in the VW Beetle and how that has become a fun feature that sets that car apart from other cars and makes customers smile. Perhaps you remember hearing some buzz about the bud vase when VW was bringing the model back to the market.
I had dinner the other night with some librarians in a fine restaurant not only known for its upscale food, but noted for its decor. When the restaurant reopened after a move, the local media told me more about its bold, strong, vibrant pink walls, gold trim, and zebra-print carpet than about what was on the menu. As I was eating, I realized for this restaurant, the decor is its bud vase. Its the thing that sets it apart from the numerous other gourmet restaurants within walking distance of its location. For people who love food, but don’t particularly seek a specific dish or cuisine, what sets this restaurant apart from the others? The decor played a role in my decision. (”My friends probably haven’t eaten here yet and they should see the inside.”) Perhaps it influences other decisions, too.
What is the bud vase for your library? What is the bud vase for your job? (You were wondering how I was going to tie this discussion into libraries and librarians, weren’t you?) In this day when many librarians are losing their positions, finding themselves repurposed, etc., we need to be very aware about the things we and our spaces offer our customers that keep them smiling, returning, supporting us, finding us valuable, useful, and relevant, and give them a good sense of whimsy. Can’t think of one? Maybe you should start by asking your customers what kind of flowers they like. Don’t forget about the power of marketing.
