The Design of PCs

About a year after airing, I listened to some segments on Weekend America marking the 25th anniversary of the personal computer. (Hooray for podcasts!) One of the pieces focused on the design of computers, which made me wonder even more why computers are still basically boxes. Apple has tried doing some innovative things to make computers less boxy and more of a stylish object to have on a desk, but why has the basic form persisted. By now, why can’t hard drives be shaped like a vase of flowers, a shapely sculpture, or even a lovely picture on the wall? USB drives can be sushi and other whimsical shapes. Why are designers still thinking about boxes?
