A Comparison of Google, Yahoo!, Ask, and Live Search

On Newslib, I found this Chicago Tribune article looking at major search engines: Google, Yahoo!, Ask, and Microsoft’s Live Search. After providing an analysis of the four engines and explaining why he prefers Yahoo!, Steve Johnson says, “[O]thers will find features or tendencies they prefer in the other search engines. It is simple to test them yourself and to switch back and forth.”

Johnson thinks Internet users average 80 searches a month. It seems like I reach that number on some days. = )

Ask employee Gary Price followed up on that Newslib post with some concrete examples of Ask’s nifty features.

Google crawls on websites more often than other search crawlers do. Google also has more pages indexed from any websites. On the question of quality indexing, perhaps Yahoo has an edge over this aspect.

If you want an easy way to compare search results from Google, Yahoo, and many other search engines, you may want to try our search tool, Zuula? We like to believe it’s the best first-choice search site, rather than single-engine search sites such as Google or Ask. But it’s also a useful tool for exploring how search engine results do — or do not — differ.

I should add that it’s nice to be able to mention Zuula at a site (loosely) affiliated with Harvard, since several of us at Zuula did graduate work there … including many years digging away in a number of the Harvard libraries.

    Cheers!
