What’s Next for the Boston Public Library?

“Commitment to the branches is an important piece of the future. So is commitment to technology and fund-raising. The tasks require more than a librarian or a politician. The job should not be a reward for past service. A library is the gateway to knowledge and literacy. Getting people, especially young people, through the gate is a job for the most energetic, visionary, and inspirational leader available.”

The first lines of that paragraph from an op-ed piece caught my atttention when I read them on the front page of yesterday’s Boston Globe. On Tuesday, November 13, a majoriy of the Boston Public Library board voted not to renew President Bernard A. Margolis’ contract in June. He held the position for about 10 years. Margolis shares his perspective in an interview earlier this week and at least one columnist speculates about what is behind the leadership change.

A search committee to find a replacement should convene in the coming weeks.
