5 years blogging is lots of wasted time … or is it?

Can you believe today is j’s scratchpad’s fifth anniversary? Yeah, well, I can. I guess it’s about time for me to get a life.

I took some time away from this space and from blogging during the last year, but I keep coming back to it for some silly reason. I guess I’m just one of these folks who’s compelled to share information. And when I started blogging, I don’t even think Babbledog was a twinkle in anyone’s eye, so I couldn’t just use that as my info sharing platform.

A lot has changed in five years. In particular, I went from being one of the very few blogging news librarians to being one of many. I think that’s a positive change. I definitely feel a lot less pressure about blogging than I did in the early days. Since everyone’s blogging, I don’t have to worry about pointing to the obvious items of note ’cause everyone else will do that. Instead, I can blog in a more relaxed fashion and focus more on what I want to blog and when I want to blog.

Platforms haven’t changed too much. When I started blogging, we spent a lot of time at blog group talking about what might be next. It seems like the developers have stopped working on our list of dream features and things have stagnated. (Gosh, doesn’t anyone at least fix bugs anymore?)

One of the best things I’ve gotten out of blogging is the community/networking stuff. I didn’t expect blogging to help me meet so many people, but, well, here I am and there you are. Pretty amazing technology, those weblogs.

Where will I be in 5 years? Probably sitting here typing still, but perhaps with a slightly newer machine.
