Perilous Patron Printing

Rachel Singer Gordon and Jessamyn West wrote in their April Tech Tips For Every Librarian column for Computers In Libraries Magazine of getting rid of the Print icon in Internet Explorer and Firefox and replacing it with a Print Preview icon:

“It’s a familiar story: A patron hits “Print”–often repeatedly–while viewing an 80-page document of which he actually wants to
print only one paragraph.”

“To replace the Print icon with the Print Preview icon in Internet Explorer 6, do the following:

1. Right-click the IE6 toolbar. Click Customize.
2. Highlight Print Preview on the left-hand side. Click Add.
3. Highlight Print on the right-hand side. Click remove.
4. Highlight Print Preview on the right-hand side. Click Move Up or Move Down until the button is positioned where you want it on
the toolbar.
5. Click Close.

“Here are the steps to replace the Print icon with the Print Preview icon in Firefox 2:”

1. Install the Print Preview button add-on. (https://addons-mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/314)
2. Restart Firefox.
3. Right-click the top toolbar and Click Customize.
4. Drag the Print Preview icon onto the toolbar.
5. Drag the Print icon off the toolbar.
6. Click Done.

The column is usually available on EBSCO a month after the publication date.
