Library Catalogs + Web 2.0 Goodness

After not finding the book he wanted on the shelf, Jon suggests more Web 2.0 goodness in library catalogs and other ways people can note when books are missing, but not checked out. He also wonders if there’s any desire in having a feed of missing items. He also mentions tagging and library catalogs.

I wonder about privacy issues with regards to his thoughts. It’s ok if he tells us what books he reads. It’s not necessarily ok if tagging leads to a situation where someone, especially a librarian, reveals something about what someone else has read. Library privacy is often a legally protected right. I’m at least one of the people who brought that up with Jon, as noted in his post. Many people might start tagging before fully thinking through that it means people might be able to figure out what they’re read.
