Congratulations, Berkman, on Your New University-wide Status

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society announced their new status as a Harvard University-wide initiative instead of being a part of Harvard Law School. This change should make it easier and more official for Berkman’s affiliates to do work in areas besides legal arenas. Many folks are already doing work that seems closer to information technology than to the law. It also signifies that the university is realizing Berkman contributes much to fields besides law. Harvard used to be fairly strict on its classification of entities, often prefering to keep them as a segment of a school instead of granting them university-wide status. Berkman’s new status is a really positive, exciting change. Congratulations!

The Harvard University Gazette has a bit more, including:

"’The Berkman Center’s focus on advancing the public interest at the intersections of law and technology, civic engagement, and international development, has already created a community of scholars from across the University,’ said Harvard Provost Steven E. Hyman. ‘The elevation to a University-wide initiative is a natural evolution and we are eager to create new networks of interaction on a University-wide basis with the intent of bringing novel approaches to examining and addressing the complex issues presented by cyberspace.’”
