Tech Program in Portland (ME): Tech Toys and Tools: What’s New, and What’s REALLY Useful
On Friday, August 22, the Boston Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is having the program “Tech Toys and Tools: What’s New, and What’s REALLY Useful” from 2-5 pm at Pierce Atwood LLP in Portland, Maine.
Since I can’t find information about this program on the Boston Chapter’s Web site, I will provide more information about it than I normally would for events.
From the email sent to the chapter’s discussion list:
“The event will be followed by a Dutch treat dinner at The Pepperclub in downtown Portland, starting at 5:30 PM for those who are interested.
A panel of experts will share their favorite tools and ideas, with emphasis on those that are freely available. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the ever-expanding number of technologies out there, this workshop will help you focus on the ones that may be most relevant and useful for you. There will be plenty of time for discussion and sharing, so come with your questions and ideas!
Presenters:
• Ben Sawyer, President of Digitalmill and Games for Health Founder, focusing on how emerging technologies are creating opportunities for non-entertainment applications in business
• Jessica Baumgart of Renesys, talking about cool Web stuff and online social news sites, including Babbledog, reddit, Digg and more
• Heather McCann of MIT Libraries, discussing SLA’s 23 Things Initiative, wikis and the new Boston chapter bliki, what it is and why you should use it.
Facilitator: Anna Burke of Babson College
Directions:
Parking Suggestions: Elm Street Garage (right across from the Portland Public Library). See l. (This is P9 on this map and will put you very close to Pierce Atwood LLP). The next best option is One City Center Garage.
Public transportation: From the Portland train station, take METRO bus #5 into Portland.
Do you need a ride? Can you give a ride? Check out the Carpooling page on the SLA Boston wiki!
While you’re there, enjoy historic Portland! This seaport city has much to offer – shopping, dining, easy access to coastal Maine attractions and much more. It’s also easy to reach from the Boston area, via the Downeaster train or bus, and from the rail/bus terminal it’s a quick and easy trip downtown. Spend some extra time – stay for a day – or the weekend!
We would appreciate registration/payment by Wednesday, August 20 in order to give an accurate count for catering. Late registrations and walk-ins are welcome, but if possible please let us know you will be coming.
SLA, NEASIST, SCIP members: $25
Students, Retired and Between Jobs Members: $15
Non-Members: $35″
(Please forgive me a bit of shameless self-promotion. I am pretty excited to be able to share Babbledog with this group of fine folks!)
