Tech Toys and Tools: What’s New, and What’s REALLY Useful, SLA Boston Chapter Program Notes

The Special Libraries Association Boston Chapter’s Tech Toys and Tools event is today.

Heather McCann of MIT introduced us to some Web 2.0 concepts and sites and led a discussion about the utility of weblogs and wikis. Most of the people in the room have experience blogging and working with wikis.

My presentation is now available. It contains a lot more in it than what I covered.

Ben Sawyer, president of Digitalmill and founder of Games for Health, discussed the growth of games in businesses and how different organizations and people are adopting them for non-gaming or recreational or entertainment purposes. Women 35 years old and older are the largest demographic of gamers, which goes against some gender stereotypes. We’ve known about gaming as educational tools for some time, but a lot of what’s happening in gaming goes beyond that. Also, gamers gain valuable skills from playing, anything from customer service skills from helping new gamers, to technical writing from creating documentation and player guides.
