Salem Athenaeum’s Bicentennial Year

The Boston Globe recently profiled the Salem Athenaeum, one of the few remaining subscription libraries in the United States. The philosophy behind the rich collection comes from a Salem tradition of book owners sharing their possessions with eager readers—some of which the institution still owns. It also owns important items, like the Diderot Encyclopedia, an original copy of the Massachusetts Bay Colony charter, and the first image of a kangaroo printed in the West.
