Well said! I continue to be dismayed by the number of people who apparently think injecting more guns into dangerous situations somehow makes those situations safer. I am appalled that the NRA believes my colleagues and I should be armed in our classrooms, and I don't understand why anyone believes that civilians should have access to military-grade weaponry and ammunition.

The content of extract.js is what I posted above. Just copy and paste it into a new plain-text file and save it. In order to run it, you'll need to download PhantomJS.

Now to extract a particular HTML element from a webpage, run the script with the URL and element's ID as arguments. (This script only works for elements that can be referenced by ID.) For example, to fetch the graph on my Congress Birdie website of bills introduced in 2012—it's an SVG element called
timeline
—you'd type:

phantomjs extract.js http://congress.joshreyes.com timeline

I hope that helps.

Hello -

Great article. It made me think of the following blog post from Parsely
(http://blog.parsely.com/post/34241210620/whatever-it-takes).

They also used PhantomJS and D3.js to use the SVG Graphics that were produced.

wow! what an adventure. i'm glad you're blogging again. and i'm amused that you're double-kayaking. i recently rediscovered my love of sea-kayaking, so we should go together - altho i'm quite weak, but if we made a water date it would be great motivation for me to keep up my exercises! either in the water or on land, i hope to see you soon, friend.

Thanks for this post. By the way...

I'm using Geotools (tried several versions) to connect to an Oracle 11.1.0 schema via GeoServer WFS. When using GeoServer 2.1.2 it works fine until you perform a commit (or an auto-commit). At that point GeoServer sticks on some problem causing the client connection to timeout. Once you shutdown the server the commit is executed (but it's too late...).

My workaround was to move to version 2.1.0 of GeoServer.

Hurrah. I especially like your explicit asking why poor kids don't deserve adequate education and public safety. I'll update my letter accordingly.

Keep up the civically-minded letters. And thanks for writing to Brown and thanks for commenting.
