Assaf Moghadam

Assaf Moghadam is a research fellow at the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and a postdoctoral fellow with the Initiative on Religion in International Affairs at the Belfer Center, Harvard University. He is the author of The Roots of Terrorism (Chelsea House, 2006) and the forthcoming The Globalization of Martyrdom: Al Qaeda, Salafi Jihad, and the Diffusion of Suicide Attacks (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2008).
He was previously a research fellow at the Belfer Center’s International Security Program (2004–2006) and a fellow in national security at the Olin Institute for Strategic Studies (2006–2007) at Harvard University. His research interests are the nature and causes of terrorism and political violence, suicide attacks, Al Qaeda and the global jihad, jihadist ideology, and the Middle East.
Moghadam is an associate of the Jebsen Center for Counterterrorism Studies, a senior advisor for the Global Justice Group, and a member of the editorial board of Studies in Conflict and Terrorism.
He has lectured widely on terrorism issues before audiences in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. His articles and book reviews have been published in Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Terrorism and Political Violence, thePolitical Science Quarterly, the Middle East Review of International Affairs (MERIA Journal), the Boston Globe, and the International Herald Tribune, among other outlets.
Moghadam holds a Ph.D. in international relations and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) from The Fletcher School at Tufts University, and a B.A. in political science from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
