MESHNet is an off-the-record forum for the exchange ideas about U.S. strategy in the Middle East. It is the “backroom” of MESH, where MESHNet members may propose options, respond to the views of others, react to events, and seek further information. Discussions on MESHNet are not for quotation or attribution.
MESHNet is open to persons with a professional interest in the Middle East and U.S. strategy and foreign policy. MESHNet especially encourages applications from academics holding relevant advanced degrees, think tank researchers, U.S. government officials, press correspondents, and NGO personnel. MESHNet admits members at its sole discretion. MESHNet is operated independently by MESH co-conveners Stephen Peter Rosen and Martin Kramer, in association with MESH.
The platform of MESHNet is an advanced message board. Discussions take two forms, open and structured.
- Open: When events break in the Middle East, MESHNet initiates an open discussion thread and notifies its members by email. These are encouraged to enter the website, post their own instant analyses, read the assessments of other members, and exchange views. (While logged on the discussion board, members may take advantage of additional options, such as private messaging and instant messaging.)
- Structured: At other times, MESHNet poses strategic or policy questions and invites all members to submit thoughtful statements within a specified period of time. These are held until the deadline and then are posted simultaneously, after which a general discussion ensues.
Membership entails no obligation to post. The message board can only be accessed by logged-in members. There is no email or rss distribution of content.
