Barnett on Fallon in Esquire
Thomas (’tell me what you really think’) Barnett has written a piece on Admiral Fallon in this month’s Esquire. Opening blurb: ” As head of U. S. Central Command, Admiral William “Fox” Fallon is in charge of American military strategy for the most troubled parts of the world. Now, as the White House has been escalating the war of words with Iran, and seeming ever more determined to strike militarily before the end of this presidency, the admiral has urged restraint and diplomacy. Who will prevail, the president or the admiral?”
The WaPo has weighed in on it. Piece by Thomas Ricks. Seems the Admiral doesn’t admire Barnett’s piece, “Fallon called it “poison pen stuff” that is “really disrespectful and ugly.” He did not cite specific objections.” Let me venture a guess — the truth hurts?
Have to ask why would Pres. Bush take out Fallon with only months left in his administration unless he had some plans for Iran. Fallon has said he would not favor military action against Iran. According to Ricks’ article, ” As he was preparing to take command, Fallon said that a war with Iran “isn’t going to happen on my watch,” according to retired Army Col. Patrick Lang.”
