Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,
“Well,” Francesca had said last week, “I can only emphasize once again, that Rene May’s answers to the police are the opposite of those that he gave earlier, on 16 October 2000, before the Dresden district court and district attorney. I think someone should have investigated the reason for these differences, much more than the police officers in this questioning session did. Two statements, both under oath, and only one can be true. In my opinion, it was the first one that was true. The second was the result of intimidation.”
Then she continued reading the second questioning of Rene May by the Dresden police.
Question: What did Herr Abdullah say before you went into the room upstairs?
Answer: The three names, and the fact that people put something into the cola, that they had hit Joseph, that they had wrapped him in a towel and that they had carried him over to the small pool, thrown him in and jumped around on him. I was supposed not to forget that and tell everything to the press. Mr. Abdullah stood behind me while I told everything like that to the people from the press.
The questioning was interrupted at 4:30 pm for ten minutes for a restroom break.
Continuation of the questioning at 4:40 pm:
Question: And what did you really see at the swimming pool?
Answer: Diana was crying and ran to the place where Joseph was lying, out of the water. I was in the water just then. We all had to get out; just at that point I noticed that something had happened.
Question: Did you receive anything from the Abdullahs in exchange for your information and your statements?
Answer: I always got some money from the Kantelbergs.
Question: How often?
Answer: Whenever I was in the pharmacy to get some medicine, I got money. It was like that about fifteen times.
Question: Who gave you the money and how much was it?
Answer: Mrs. Kantelberg gave me 50 DM once. Mr. Abdullah gave me 100 DM once and then alternately 5 DM and 2 DM.
Question: Who did you tell about the money?
Answer: My big brother and my sister, but not my father.
Question: Did you go to the pharmacy sometimes because you knew that you could get money there?
Answer: No.
“In this transcript of the questioning,” Francesca said, “and I want to emphasize again that the Kantelberg-Abdullahs, Joseph parents, themselves gave me this transcript – in this transcript we see that the Kantelberg-Abdullahs did do something that was not very smart, by giving Rene May money in order to be sure that he would tell what he saw when Joseph died. But the questions by the police strike me somehow as being just a little too pat. In any case, the parents felt completely alone, without any help. No one wanted to investigate the case properly, and in that kind of situation, people sometimes do things without considering the consequences. I don’t believe, though, that the payment of the money necessarily means that Rene May’s first statement in front of the judge and district attorney in Dresden was false. On the contrary, I believe that this second statement was the result of intimidation and corruption. We’ve recently seen a large number of examples of how strong the influence of neo-Nazis is in Saxony, and elsewhere in Germany. We’ve also recently had a large number of examples of how corrupt the government can be in Germany, at any given level.”
She looked at us for a moment. “For me, the deciding element here is the fact that the Dresden district attorney has still not returned to the Kantelberg-Abdullahs the large number of different pieces of proof that the they had collected, pieces of proof that were confiscated eighteen months ago. Why? Is the district attorney afraid of something? Or is he still preparing for the trial – a trial that was supposed to begin in January 2002 – the trial of the parents on charges of ‘spreading false suspicions’? That trial could be very interesting, if it ever takes place.”

Er hofft aber, man werde diese Fehler übersehen, um hinter den Fehlern das sehen zu können, was in diesem Schreiben und in dieser Affäre von zentraler Bedeutung ist.

Sehr geehrter Herr Graf, sehr geehrte Freunde,
„Na ja,“ hatte Francesca letzte Woche gesagt, „ich kann nur noch einmal wiederholen, dass Rene Mays Antworten auf die Fragen der Polizei das Gegenteil davon sind, was er früher am 16.10.2000 vor dem Amtsgericht Dresden und einem Dresdner Staatsanwalt gegeben hat. Den Grund für den Unterschied hätte man weiter suchen sollen, als die Polizisten in dieser Vernehmung getan haben. Zwei Aussagen, beide unter Eid, und nur eine kann der Wahrheit entsprechen. Meiner Meinung nach war die erste wahr. Die zweite war die Folge von Einschüchterung“.
Dann fuhr sie fort in der Vorlesung der zweite Vernehmung von Rene May, vor Polizei.
Frage: Was hat Herr Abdullah, bevor Du den Raum oben betreten hast, alles gesagt?
Antwort: Die drei Namen und dass die Leute Zeug in die Cola getan haben, dass sie Joseph geschlagen haben, dass sie ihn in ein Handtuch eingewickelt haben und dass sie ihn ans Becken getragen haben, ihn rewarfen und auf ihm rum gesprungen sind. Ich sollte das nicht vergessen und alles der Presse erzählen. Herr Abdullah stand während ich das so den Leuten von der Presse erzählt habe, hinter mir.
Die Vernehmung wird um 16:30 Uhr für 10 Minuten für eine Toilettenpause unterbrochen.
Fortsetzung der Vernehmung 16:40 Uhr:
Frage: Und was hast Du wirklich im Bad gesehen?
Antwort: Diana hat geweint und ist zu der Stelle gerannt, wo außerhalb des Wassers der Joseph lag. Ich war da gerade im Wasser. Wir mußten alle raus, erst zu diesem Moment merkte ich, dass was passiert ist.
Frage: Hast Du für Deine Auskünfte und Angaben von Abdullahs etwas erhalten?
Antwort: Ich habe immer von den Kantelbergs Geld bekommen.
Frage: Wie oft war das der Fall?
Antwort: Immer wenn ich in der Apotheke war um Arznei zu holen, habe ich Geld bekommen. Das war so etwa 15 Mal der Fall.
Frage: Wer hat Dir das Geld gegeben und welche Beträge waren das?
Antwort: Frau Kantelberg hat mir mal 50 DM gegeben. Herr Abdullah hat mir mal 100 DM gegeben und dann im Wechsel mal 5 DM, mal 2 DM.
Frage: Wem hast Du von dem Geld erzählt?
Antwort: Meinem Großen und meiner Schwester, meinem Vati nicht.
Frage: Bist Du manchmal in die Apotheke gegangen, weil Du wusstest, dass Du dort Geld bekommst?
Antwort: Nein.
„In diesem Protokoll“, sagte Francesca, „und ich will immer wieder betonen, dass die Kantelberg-Abdullahs selbst mir es gegeben haben – in diesem Protokoll, sehen wir, dass es sein kann, dass die Kantelberg-Abdullahs etwas sehr Unkluges getan haben, indem sie dem Rene May Geld gegeben haben, um sicher zu sein, dass er alles erzählen würde, was er sah, als Joseph starb. Aber die Fragen der Polizei scheinen mir irgendwie ein bisschen zu parat zu sein. Auf jeden Fall aber fühlten sich die Eltern ganze allein, ohne jeder Hilfe. Niemand wollte den Fall richtig untersuchen, und in so eine Situation tut man manchmal etwas Unüberlegtes. Ich glaube aber nicht, dass die Auszahlung des Geldes notwendigerweise heißt, dass Rene Mays erste Aussage, vor der Richterin und dem Staatsanwalt in Dresden falsch war. Im Gegenteil glaube ich, dass diese zweite Aussage die Folge der Einschüchterung und der Korruption war. Wir haben neulich sehr viele Beispiele davon gehabt, wie kräftig der Einfluss der Neonazis in Sachsen und anderswo in Deutschland ist. Wir haben neulich auch viele Beispiele davon gehabt, wie korrupt die Regierung in Deutschland sein kann, egal auf welcher Ebene“.
Sie schaute uns einen Augenblick an. „Das, was für mich entscheidend ist, ist die Tatsache, dass die Dresdner Staatsanwaltschaft immer noch nicht den Kantelberg-Abdullahs die zahlreichen Beweise zurückgegeben, die die Eltern selbst gesammelt haben, und die die Staatsanwaltschaft vor ungefähr achtzehn Monaten beschlagnahmte. Warum? Hat die Staatsanwaltschaft Angst vor irgendetwas? Oder bereitet sie immer noch ein Prozess – ein Prozess, das im Januar 2002 beginnen sollte – gegen die Eltern vor, wegen ,Verbreitung falscher Verdächtigungen’? Dieses Prozess könnte sehr interessant sein, wenn es überhaupt stattfindet.“
