Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,
Continuation of a report broadcast by the program “Kontraste” over the Rundfunk Berlin- Brandenburg television network on 28 August 2005, written by Alexander Kobylinski and Caroline Walter. The report indicates what sort of atmosphere existed in a town that is located a few kilometers from Sebnitz, even at the time Joseph and his parents were living there and when Joseph died:
“Victim (in hospital): ‘I turned around, and a Nazi thug was standing behind me. He said, “Now we’re gonna get you too.” Then he hit me in the face with a pair of brass knuckles.’
“KONTRASTE Reporter: ‘How badly were you injured?’
“Victim: ‘I had a laceration under my eye and possibly a broken cheek bone.’
“KONTRASTE Commentary: ‘The attackers bawled out “Sieg Heil!” And the victim’s friend? He apparently sustained serious skull and brain injuries. The police arrived too late’.”

Fortsetzung eines Beitrags der „Kontraste“-Sendung vom 28.08.2005 über den Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg gesendet, ein Bericht von Alexander Kobylinski und Caroline Walter. Der Bericht weist darauf hin, was für eine Atmosphäre existierte, in einer Stadt ein paar Kilometer von Sebnitz entfernt, auch in der Zeit, wo Joseph und seine Eltern dort wohnten, und wo Joseph starb:
„Opfer: ‚Da habe ich mich umgedreht, da stand ein Nazischläger hinter mir und hat gesagt, dich kriegen wir auch noch, und hat mir mit einem Schlagring in der Faust ins Gesicht geschlagen.’
KONTRASTE ‚Welche Verletzungen haben Sie da jetzt davon getragen?’
Opfer: ‚Ich hab eine Platzwunde unterm Auge, und wahrscheinlich ein angebrochenes Jochbein.’
Die Angreifer haben ‚Sieg Heil!’ gebrüllt. Bei seinem Freund: Verdacht auf Schädel-Hirn-Trauma. Die Polizei kam zu spät.”

“Pirna, a town in the ‘Switzerland of Saxony’, a friendly tourist destination – images that are the region’s livelihood. At night, though, the young people of Pirna hardly dare to walk the streets. It’s Saturday, and we’ve received a call that there have been injuries – Right-wing extremists have attacked some young people in the town. We visit the victims in the hospital; out of fear they want to remain anonymous in an interview“.

Moderator: “Imagine that your children call the police because they’re in extreme danger – and no one comes.
“Imagine that you’re so badly beaten you need to be hospitalized but you’re left on your own because the police either have no time or they take their time in responding.
“Welcome to Pirna, the town in the beautiful region known as “the Switzerland of Saxony,” the town with the ugly problem: right-wing extremists have literally beaten out an area of sovereignty over the streets and squares of the town – by beating up ordinary townspeople.
“And the police? They’re not there. At least not when you urgently need them.
“You can’t imagine any of that? Neither could our reporters Alexander Kobylinski and Caroline Walter – until they went to Pirna.”

However this situation indicates what sort of atmosphere existed in a town that is located a few kilometers from Sebnitz, when Joseph and his parents were living there and where Joseph died.
“Waiting in Line after an Emergency Call – How the Police in Pirna Hand People Over to Violent Right-Wing Extremists
“Four years after they were outlawed and two years after a series of court trials, the militant members of the ‘Skinheads Saechsische Schweiz’ are regrouping again in secret. ‘And not just to drink beer,’ says the local public prosecutor. Attacks by right-wing radicals have been increasing recently. The victims feel they’re not being taken seriously by the police, who are simply abandoning them to their fate. Our reporters Alexander Kobylinski and Caroline Walter tell us about police who have evidently surrendered to German right-wing extremism.”

weiter unten steht ein Beitrag der „Kontraste“-Sendung vom 28.08.2005 über den Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg, der eine Situation beschreibt, die inzwischen angeblich korrigiert wurde. Diese Situation jedoch weist darauf hin, was für eine Atmosphäre existierte, in einer Stadt ein paar Kilometer von Sebnitz entfernt, als Joseph und seine Eltern dort wohnten, und wo Joseph starb.
„Bei Notruf in der Warteschlange – Polizei in Pirna liefert Bürger gewalttätigen Rechtsextremisten aus
Vier Jahre nach ihrem Verbot und zwei Jahre nach einer Prozessserie formieren sich die militanten Mitglieder der ‚Skinheads Sächsische Schweiz’ erneut konspirativ. ‚Nicht nur zum Biertrinken’, sagt der zuständige Staatsanwalt. In letzter Zeit häufen sich wieder Überfälle von Rechtsradikalen. Deren Opfer fühlen sich von der Polizei nicht ernst genommen und im Stich gelassen. “Heitmann’s successor, Manfred Kolbe, also a member of the Christian Democratic Union, recommended that the town of Sebnitz sue the newspaper ‘Bild’ for damages, because it was ‘Bild’ that first wrote a story about the boy Joseph’s case. That such a statement by the Minister of Justice, who is the public prosecutor’s superior, would strengthen neither the public prosecutor’s motivation to investigate the case nor the readiness of witnesses to make any further statements is obvious. Such behavior during an ongoing investigation borders on obstruction of justice or the crime of aiding the perpetrator or perpetrators of an offense by preventing their prosecution.”

Jurk referred to a letter that had been written by the late Joachim Richter, who was a member of the legislature in Saxony. The letter was sent to the then Christian Democrat minister of justice in Saxony, Steffen Heitmann, who ignored it.”

“The young man who threatened the television team also received support, in a sense, from Saxony’s Minister President Kurt Biedenkopf, who told the press there were indications right-wing extremists were being paid by the media to create the kind of scene the man had made. Spiegel-TV, one of Germany’s most reliable broadcasters, whose reporters had taped the scene, contemptuously rejected Biedenkopf’s assertion.
“Even the reaction of one of Germany’s main political parties, the Christian Democratic Union, in the Sebnitz city council and throughout the state of Saxony could only have strengthened the self-confidence of the right-wingers. Three years before this article was written, indications that Joseph had been murdered reached the highest levels of the town government. These indications, however, were all rejected as unfounded, and anyone who made such accusations was dismissed as a ‘nutcase’.”

„Er bekam ebenfalls Schützenhilfe von Ministerpräsident Biedenkopf. Es gebe Hinweise, erklärte dieser der Presse, dass die Rechten für solche Auftritte von den Medien bezahlt würden – ein Vorwurf den Spiegel-TV, das die Szenen gedreht hatte, mit Verachtung zurückwies.
Auch die Reaktion der in Stadtrat und im Land dominierenden CDU kann das Selbstbewusstsein der Rechten nur stärken. Hinweise auf eine Mordtat hatten vor drei Jahren natürlich auch das Rathaus erreicht. “The Kantelberg-Abdulla family has been living in fear of right-wing extremists since the death of their boy Joseph. They have received threatening telephone calls: ‘You’re next’. Doors were locked and windows barred at their house in Sebnitz. They never wanted to answer the door.
“When the case became known, the right-wing mob openly threatened the family in the presence of the media. Anyone who became involved on the side of the family was also threatened. Once a young man stood in front of the Abdullas’ windows and yelled, ‘Tomorrow you die’, while television cameras recorded the scene. The television crew talked to him and tried to force him to be quiet. He then screamed at the reporters and looked as though he expected them all simply to leave.”

Continuation of the letter of last week (from an article on the World Socialist Website: “Der Tod des sechsjaehrigen Joseph Abdulla”, by Dietmar Henning, 30 November 2000, www.wsws.org/de/2000/nov2000/jose-n30.shtml):
“The German neo-Nazi party known as the NPD (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands) has about 1000 members in the state of Saxony. This is a higher membership figure than in most other German states. The party is represented on the Sebnitz city council by Johannes Mueller, a physician. The party received 6.5 percent of the vote in the last city elections. The surrounding area, known as the ‘Saechsische Schweiz’ or the ‘Switzerland of Saxony’, is the stronghold of neo-Nazi activities. A group known as ‘Skinheads Saechsische Schweiz’ is reputed to be the best organized and also – as a police raid recently demonstrated – a heavily-armed and militant Nazi group. An association called the ‘White Warrior Crew Sebnitz’, a group close to the NPD, is active in Sebnitz itself.”

“Renate Kantelberg has indignantly rejected the idea that witnesses were bought. On the contrary, she said, she had impressed upon all the witnesses that they must not say anything that they could not remember exactly. She said that at most she had given them a package of cough drops or a packet of cigarettes.
“Exactly what happened on 13 June 1997 at the Sebnitz swimming pool cannot at present be determined, and probably never will be, since the Dresden chief public prosecutor now retains all control over any investigations. However, no one can ignore the fact that the neo-Nazis continue to carry on their atrocious activities in Sebnitz and feel that they are stronger than ever, especially since the former Minister-President of Saxony, Kurt Biedenkopf, while still in office, made his statement casting doubt on the idea that the circumstances of Joseph’s death were anything other than an accident.”

„Renate Kantelberg hat den Verdacht, Zeugenaussagen seien gekauft worden, mit Empörung zurückgewiesen. Sie habe den Zeugen im Gegenteil eingeschärft, nichts auszusagen, woran sie sich nicht genau erinnern können, und ihnen zum Dank höchstens eine Packung Hustenbonbons oder eine Päckchen Zigaretten geschenkt.
Was am 13. Juni 1997 im Freibad Sebnitz genau geschehen ist, lässt sich gegenwärtig nicht eindeutig feststellen und wird, nachdem die Generalstaatsanwaltschaft in Dresden die Ermittlungen wieder an sich gezogen hat, möglicherweise auch nie festzustellen sein. Dass aber Neonazis in dieser Stadt ihr Unwesen treiben und sich nach dem Auftreten Biedenkopfs noch stärker fühlen werden, lässt sich nicht übersehen.“
