Yeah, Nate is back. I was wondering about your take on all this. Like you, I'm totally pissed. My issue is how do progressive Christians respond. George Lakoff had a diary on Daily Kos about how next Sunday will be Social Justice Sunday, organized by a group of religious progressives as response to this event. Who though will pay attention? The media seems so tone deaf on religious issues that I seriously despair of the dynamic surrounding the discussion of religious values changing anytime soon in the culture.

Yeah, it was sort of a throw-away line, but what I was trying to get at was the idea of implementing an exclusively religious legal system, legislated and interpreted by religious figures. For the Christianists, this is their whole idea that the basis of our law and society comes from the Judeo-Christian Scriptures, and from their abusive interpretation of those Scriptures.

If you have any links about this process going on up in Canada, I'd love to read more.

Somehow stumbled onto your blog while researching the Senate Constitution subcommittee hearings on marriage amendments - funny how google does that. Great blog and having studied politics and economics, I can appreciate crazy mathematical models with 101 variables attempting to explain why people choose strawberry ice cream over vanilla, why people won't push the button and send missiles across the world, etc.

I agree and relate to most of your recent entries, although I might differ on one throw-away line. I actually support allowing groups who want to use sharia law to arbitrate family law disputes. It's a big debate in Canada now and after hearing both arguments, I think that if implemented properly sharia courts can go a long way in promoting legal pluralism and possibly liberalizing sharia law itself.
