Legal aid should be one of those guaranteed human rights in our country, where everyone seems to be involved in lawsuits these days.

Tough call here, I wouldn't call Foreclosure Law something that is necessarily a social service branch of the legal profession. Why not? It has to do with how people came to be in such financial problems with their homes in the first place. People who are low income and facing foreclosure might be an exception to that, but there are many low income folks not facing foreclosure, and you have to ask why that is.

Ah, but the problem with any government job these days is whether or not there will be enough money to continue paying government employees such decent salaries. I think that this kind of job security will be a thing of the past within a year or two. Entrepreneurial law students should start their own new directions in the legal field if they want to have long, fulfilling careers.

I totally agree with this quote from your post:

"This practice asks students to 1) highlight an area that is most interesting to them; 2) identify the people with whom they want to associate; and 3) understand where key issues in their areas of interest proliferate."

It's not that a legal education is going to be irrelevant, but a general education in law is going to be harder to use to actually find work in the legal profession. The more focused a student is, the better their opportunities.

Schools can't hold hands to newly graduated law school students. Students have to be taught to be creative about what they want to achieve with their legal education. For example, a student recently graduated might find themselves trying to stick out in a pool of applicants at a major law firm. Why not try to be a bigger fish in a smaller pool, perhaps in a place where there are less lawyers and less law firms?

It's not as hard as people think to land a job through an externship, but the more creative these law student grads are the more money they will make and the more content they will be with their work.

The $700,000 received by the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles will be very beneficial in assisting them with all the work that they do. I think there is an important need for a lawyer to handle housing work especially in the Los Angeles area. People in this economy have been very hard hit and many do not have the means to seek out legal assistance because it is expensive and they can not afford it.

Hopefully in the future we will be able to see the results of this money and how it allowed LAFLA to help needy people in the Los Angeles area. It is organizations like this one that need a positive cash flow to continue doing the work that they do for the people of the community.
