Just got back from a showing of the new Alexander Payne movie Sideways here in Manhattan. I went with a couple of old friends to this movie about old friends on a pre-wedding bachelor road trip in central California wine country. Everyone in the theater was laughing. Highly recommended.

Sound’s good, I will go to see probably tonight. How about Broadway shows? Did you get your ticket? if not, don’t sad, same thing happened to me. I went there from South CA 3 weeks ago, but I didn’t have chance to get in there, so next time, it is better to make plan and buy ticket on the Internet early; for me, this season probably just go to Laguna Playhouse and I will see 2 shows: Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse and Late Nite Catechism, Did somebody already see them? How are these shows?

It is sad, you know what, I went to Yahoo and searched for “sideway”s showtimes and locations, but the result came out and I was surprised, it is not playing in my area;so I probably will go to rent DVD “About Schmidt”, stay home, watch it and eat Shepherd’s Pie with my son, it is so YUMMY…

Li: No Broadway for me this time. Lots of museums and hanging out with friends.
Michael: It pains me to admit that Payne could make a decent movie without assistance from my cousin (the producer of A.S.) but Sideways is at least as good as About Schmidt. The movies are different. Sideways is much more lighthearted and the characters are not as sad or pathetic. How can you feel sorry for two guys vacationing in the California vineyards driving around in a convertible with two fun-loving local gals?

This is a brilliant film– just saw it this morning at Talk cinema www.talkcinema.com). I would have to disagree about the sad and pathetic guy part. One of my favorite actors- Paul Giamatti- plays a want-to-be novelist/has-to-be school teacher who can’t get over his divorce and basically believes he is a total failure.
The movie is highly entertaining and has some insanely funny scenes.
But, I must comment on 2 things– 1) seems that even the best of friends fight on trips- even short ones and; 2) all men lie and cheat.
Go see the film- it is really worth it!

It took me a second to realize that the movie’s title was “Sideways” and that you weren’t watching it rotated 90 degrees.
My first thought was “man, you must have had a sore neck after that one.”

Since no one has mentioned it…there is an incredibly beautiful scene with Giamotti and Virginia Madsen talking to each other about wine (ostensibly) – but are speaking about things much deeper….. have seen it twice and I still think it is amazing.
