Commenting on the Embraer 179 only: aside from being incredibly comfortable relative to other RJs, another critical advantage is that the overhead bins are large enough for standard, rollaboard carry-ons. Other RJs force passengers to gate check those bags.

"the airspeed tape has little adjacent v-speed bugs for Vx, Vy, best-slide[sic], etc"
Avidyne PFD Rev 6 (currently available for upgrade) including.

Re: Embraer, I like the Phenom 100 a lot. They might be one showing in BED in 2008 :) Of course then I'd have to downgrade from the Avidyne to the G1000.

Not to be too nit-picky, but I hope you're training your IR students to use the autopilot most of the time. Yes, they need to be comfortable keeping it right-side-up without the thing, but in the real world, and these days on the checkride, they need to be using otto for all single pilot IMC.

Philip -

A couple of comments on your post.

The COM 1/2 Split is disabled by default these days. You can enable it through the avionics configuration screen. There have been reports of inadequate isolation between the two antennas on some planes, but it works fine on my plane. That said, it's really not that useful in day-to-day use.

The side tone issue is because the volumes on the radio vs. headsets vs. master audio were incorrectly set. Turn up the radios, turn down the headsets and make sure the master is correctly set. Be prepared for the coming-of-doom beep from the autopilot.

The vertical navigation and approach plates are supposed to be coming to the G1000 at some point. There are no victor airways -- irritating, but I guess a philosophical (read, religious) thing with Garmin.

You can get the wind vector numerically from the AUX pages.
