To be fair to the French, the U.S. Air Force has a number of units that use chickens as their symbols.
I flew F-4s in the 67th Fighter Squardon. We were very proud of our Disney designed ‘Fighting Cock’ patch:

The Bersaglieri, arguably Italy’s toughest assault troops wear rooster plumes on their dress uniform hats. They only double time in parades and their band plays wind instruments while running - that takes stamina.
