   Hi Phil,

   For airplanes, a lot of people get their CFI to build up the hours needed to get a commercial job. How is this typically done for helicopters? Or do people keep renting until they get to the 500 hours in helicopters needed as a CFI helicopter? I assume this is an insurance requirement.

   There’s a heli school nearby and I’m thinking about adding on a commercial Heli.

   Some helicopter insurance will allow instructors at between 150 and 300 hours in some types of helicopters. Pathfinder insurance, which is a captive carrier owned by Robinson, demands 500 hours for the R44, of which we have two, so that’s why we want 500 hours. Most flight schools use the R22 primarily and can hire instructors with 200-300 hours, depending on their insurance carrier.

   [I might add that the military would never let someone with less than 800-1200 hours instruct.]
