The best way to describe my background is to say that my career is immersed at the intersection of law and technology.  From hands on work as a systems engineer, to co-founding of several venture backed software companies, to high level policy work, nearly all my experience involves the relationship between law and tech.

Areas I’d say I have particular expertise in in the realm of e-law:

- E-Discovery and Compliance.  I was co-founder of StoredIQ (originally named Deepfile).  Our company was arguably one of the first entrants into the market for managing “unstructured” data.  StoredIQ is happily still in existence.  This is actually my favorite subject as it constantly integrates breakthrough technology with bad human judgement to create all sorts of legal drama.

- Copyright, IP monetization, and online media.  I was formerly a VP at Top Ten Media, the incubating company of one of the now leading social shopping companies, StyleFeeder.  While there, along with John Palfrey, I co-founded RightsAgent.  We were among the first companies to build a transactional system conforming to the Creative Commons Plus (CC+) framework, adding both license management along with a monetization option for publishers of user-generated content.  RightsAgent is sadly no longer in existence.

I have a BS in Engineering Mechanics from New Mexico Tech.  There I completed graduate level coursework in how to make really big pieces of rock become very tiny pieces of dust under Per-Anders Persson, who I will always miss.

I have a JD from the Catholic University of America.  While completing my studies I worked at the FCC’s Office of Strategic Planning and the Berkman Center.

I grew up in Indianapolis, IN; and have lived in Socorro, NM; Austin, TX; Washington, DC; Boston, MA; and now reside in Silicon Valley, CA.
