Ernie Pyle’s Columns
I admire war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Until today, I don’t think I had ever read any of his columns, but I knew who he was and I appreciated the work he did. Indiana University’s journalism program has begun to put some of his pieces online.
Maybe Harvard should have broken the tradition of not awarding honorary degrees in absentia. Ernie Pyle couldn’t make it to Commencement in 1945 because of World War II; and, he knew that meant he probably wouldn’t be awarded the degree. Pyle was killed by enemy fire on April 18 that same year in Okinawa.
