Archimedes’ Palimpsest

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Tonight’s Nova was about a palimpsest containing a long lost work of Archimedes: The Method. Not only did the WGBH program talk about Archimedes’ contributions to the field of mathematics, but a good portion of the show was about the techniques being used to conserve and read the text. There’s lots about it [...]

Does Student Class Work Count as Journalism?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

From this week’s subscriber-only Chronicle of Higher Education: New Jersey tried to seize video tapes from a class project exploring whether a death row inmate received a fair trial. The student’s lawyers argued that the project counted as journalism because of the nature of the class and the tapes could not be seized because [...]

Recent Articles about Blogging

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

The Nieman Foundation’s publication Nieman Reports has an article in the Summer issue about blogging the Iraq war.
The New England Press Association’s Bulletin has an article about blogging that states that blogging poses no threat to journalism, though some bloggers are good journalists. The article focuses on blogs in the Boston-area, but I don’t [...]

Proposed Changes to FERPA

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

I read in Monday’s subscriber-only Chronicle of Higher Education that someone is proposing some changes to the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (Ferpa) that would make it possible for people to sue colleges and universities who violate their privacy. The changes would also extend protection to college/university applicants and some business partners.

Splain Somethin’ to Me

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

How can people in Boston at a Jump (formerly Jump, Little Children) concert not dance when they hear the music? I can’t stop moving now and the concert ended at about 9:30 pm. Of course, I’m from those fantastic Music Farm days way back when 96 Wave was playing Jump as a new [...]

Jump at Avalon, 9/29/03

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Tonight’s concert was amazing. Jump (formerly Jump, Little Children) only played for about 40 minutes, but it was an amazing set. They showed off some of their newer songs and a few favorites from Vertigo and Magazine. I didn’t recognize anything from Licorice Tea Demos or Buzz.
I really like their new sound. [...]

“Taming the Star Runner”

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

(Look! I’m typing about Banned Books Week today!)
Just to prove that I’m not a total moron when it comes to controversial books, I want to let you know that I read the first chapter of S.E. Hinton’s “Taming the Star Runner” last night and can definitely see why someone would find it controversial. [...]

DDC/OCLC Trademark Suit on Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

Not that I’m giving away any answers, but Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!, a public radio show, just featured the OCLC trademark infringement lawsuit against the Library Hotel in New York on their segment where a caller listens to three scenarios and must pick the one that is true. The caller did not pick [...]

Grandiose Plans Gone Awry Again

Friday, September 26th, 2003

I had these elaborate dreams of posting something about banned books every day during Banned Books Week. And, well, the week ends Saturday and I haven’t been able to do it. I got swamped at work last week and will still be digging out week after next, so my plans to post something [...]
