Negative Editorial about Librarians

Friday, September 26th, 2003

This commentary griping about librarians agitates me so much, I’m not even sure why I’m including it on my blog other than that I’m a librarian who believes in free access to information and including a variety of viewpoints in my collection. The author rants about a variety of things about librarians and libraries, [...]

Holding NPR/WBUR Accountable

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

Dave Winer does something a lot of us want to do (uh…besides software development), especially during fundraiser weeks on public radio and television stations–he tries to get some answers from WBUR, a local National Public Radio affiliate, about their finances.

Ban the Agony of Alice?!?

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

Someone hit my blog today searching for “Ban the Agony of Alice.” My hackles are standing up. It’s Banned Books Week, one of my favorite weeks as a librarian and, well, as an intellectual. The week is a celebration of intellectual freedom, the freedom to read, not a week to ban [...]

Photo of the Week

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

Blog reader Jim sent this my way asking what kind of school assignment the boy in this photo was given that took him out into Hurricane Isabel. As we discussed the photo, we started talking about related issues, like why Time would select the photo when it doesn’t seem to be that related to [...]

SC Rock Weekend in Hampton Beach, NH

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

Or so it seems anyway. Jump, Little Children’s playing Saturday night and Hootie and the Blowfish, Edwin McCain, and Sister Hazel from Florida play Sunday night at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. Roadtrip anyone?
All we need now is Waffle House.
JLC is going to be in Boston on Monday night. I so can’t [...]

From blog reader Paul:
Two Indiana librarians tried to stop a robber from stealing $71 from the Crawfordsville District Public Library’s cash drawer. During the resulting struggle, she bit both librarians.

Somerville Primary Election Results

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

According to the Somerville Elections Department, Joe Curtatone and Tony LaFuente beat Mayor Dorothy Kelly Gay in today’s preliminary election. The results are fairly close: Kelly Gay had 3197, LaFuente 3412, and Curtatone 3572. It looks like more than 10,000 people came out to vote, though not much more than 10,000. [...]

Lots of Election Traffic in My Referer Log Today

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2003

If anyone doubts that people search the Internet for information about candidates close to or during an election or that information on Web sites is important to voters, here’s something to chew on: much of the traffic I can read through my referer log is coming from searches based on terms related to today’s primary [...]

Why Banned Books Week?

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

When I woke up this morning, I pondered why this week is still called Banned Books Week. Surely by now, someone has challenged or tried to ban a CD or movie or other non-book object in a library. Think about all the discussions of Internet filtering. I suppose I went off on [...]

OCLC Sues NY Hotel Over DDC

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

This lawsuit alleges that the Library Hotel in New York is infringing on a trademark of OCLC, a major library consortium which owns the rights to the Dewey Decimal System of classification, by using the DDC as a theme for the hotel. The room numbers correspond to DDC classification numbers (like 641.5: cookbooks) and [...]
