Julie Leung Visits the Seattle Public Library
I just happened to Technorati this blog today and found Julie Leung’s post about a visit to the new Seattle Public Library. Julie and I have bumped into each other in the blogosphere before and we had a chance to meet and talk over dim sum a few months ago. One of my blog readers sent me a special pullout section from a newspaper about the new library. Nancy Pearl, model for the librarian action figure, works/worked there. I should take a field trip out there if I ever get some down time again.
To answer Julie’s question, it’s difficult for me to have a response just from a textual description of the space. In order for me to form a solid opinion of it, I’d have to see it. It sounds really innovative and useful, but without wandering through the stacks myself, using it, and seeing how full it really is, it’s difficult to have an opinion. Also, spirals can waste a lot of horizontal space or make some horizontal space useless. Without seeing the actual size of the spiral and how it coordinates with the book collection and other features of the library, I don’t think I can really say anything. And how will a 2 degree grade effect the books after fifty or one hundred years of leaning slightly? Julie, I hope to have a better response for you one day.
The kids’ area sounds totally cool. It’s fitting that Julie describes the colors as sherbert, then buys her kids some gelato.
(Hhhmmm maybe some Seattle librarians would be interested in hearing me babble about blogs …)
(Speaking of dim sum, there’s an outing on Sunday.)

Just let me know whenever you come to town to check out the library and I’ll take you out for gelato…we could do dim sum too!
Enjoy your outing on Sunday…

I have a picture of you in that hat that I’ve been wishing I could post because it looks great. But you enjoined me against taking it… I’ve a picture of Julie from that morning too. Have to get those on the web somehow.

Hey fp, it’s ironic that you mention a photo of me in a funny hat ’cause in a coversation about search engine photos tonight, I jokingly said something about the search engine using one of me in another funny hat: the beanie that’s the Special Libraries Association News Division Webmaster hat.
We’re doing another round of dim sum on Sunday at 1:30 pm. I think I’ll wear that hat again.
