Continuous Computing

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

Someone in the blog group mentioned the idea of continuous computing–where so many of us are constantly at our computers: during meetings, at home in front of the telly, while we’re commuting, etc. I found a brief bit about it in MIT’s Technology Review.

Computer Backups

Monday, July 4th, 2005

I spent most of my July 4th holiday burning files from my laptop to CDs. (Those folks who have been nagging me to backup my machine just cheered loudly.) That way, if it decides to go bonkers again, I’ll feel more independent.
I figure I can do a massive backup like this maybe once or twice [...]

I don’t want to get into the Mac vs. IBM debate, but I do find Shimon’s words about whether IBM should buy Apple interesting and humorous.

Hidden Data in Computer Files

Tuesday, August 17th, 2004

Many of us put computer files online or send files to others without thinking about all of the hidden information they contain. Metadata: Are you Protectected?: Documents can hide damaging information in the August issue of Law Technology News discusses some of the hidden information in Word, WordPerfect, and PDF files. TecsChange: Technology for Social Change

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004

I mentioned TecsChange to a friend of mine who’s trying to find a good home for some old computer equipment he has. What the Computer Repairmen Fixed

Monday, February 16th, 2004

Since a few of you have asked for an update, here’s what’s on the invoice for repairs done to my Mac that wouldn’t boot:

New PRAM battery (While I was at the repair place, one guy changed the battery and was not able to boot the machine, so a new battery alone wasn’t the solution.)
Reseated the [...]

Computer Repairs

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2004

A convenient severe headache today convinced me to take time off work so I could deal with my computer that won’t boot. After a nice nap and some, uh, reading and food, I took my computer to a place several people recommended. Someone
described it as a hole in the wall and he was right. I [...]

Home Computer Won’t Boot

Saturday, January 17th, 2004

Eeks! I can’t get my home computer to boot. I think it’s definitely a signal that I can’t procrastinate about buying a new machine any longer (darn it). I’m hoping to get it to boot, reinstall the OS (since I haven’t done that yet this month), and at least do another backup (since I haven’t [...]

I’m Back in the Land of Those with Internet Access at Home

Wednesday, August 20th, 2003

Out of sheer frustration, I tried something a blog reader suggested to me over the phone last night and it worked. I’m so baffled. If I summon the dialtone on my cordless phone, my modem can dial fine. I can get a dialtone fine from the back of my modem, so I [...]
