Librarians Aren’t Software Innovators?!? What?!?

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Hello, Adam. I’m j. I’m a software, well, information technology innovator and a librarian. If you don’t believe that, perhaps some of my friends can vouch for me. If your RSS dinner meshes with my crowded schedule, perhaps I can prove to you in person that some librarians do cool things with technology.
Y’all, let’s keep [...]

Research Indicates Librarianship is Boring, Stressful

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

Completely counter to librarianship being an excellent career worth pursuing is this article about research showing librarians are stressed out and bored–another stereotype of the profession.
People on the discussion list for solo librarians, where a colleage in New Zealand shared the article, wonder which librarians or library workers the researcher asked and if the journalist [...]

Career as Librarian Underrated, but Excellent

Wednesday, January 11th, 2006

Marty Nemko of US News and World Report lists librarianship as one of the excellent career choices of 2006, falling in line with the common perception (and quite possibly fact) that being a librarian is a great job.
I’ve read several posts about Nemko’s comments. Steven’s thoughts are shared by others.

Committee on the Portrayal of Librarians?

Friday, December 30th, 2005

I heard a blip on an October Weekend America about a committee that’s part of the American Psychological Association that focuses on the portrayal of those professionals in films. It’s a way of monitoring the stereotype in order to counteract it. Is there something like that for librarians? Do we need one?

News Media Notices Librarians Challenge Librarian Stereotype

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

The Associated Press carries an article showing how librarians are challenging the traditional librarian stereotype.
As Jessamyn points out, she’s included in the article. I wonder if blogging the Democratic National Convention counts as breaking the stereotype.

Librarians Pose for Calendar

Wednesday, September 21st, 2005

Some Wisconsin librarians had the idea of posing for a calendar as a farewell present to a retiring colleague. The cost of the project made them rethink their plan. They decided to sell calendars to the public as a way to raise funds for their libraries.
Some British librarians undertook a similar project in December 2003.
I [...]

Using a Librarian Stereotype to Market a Bar

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

This blog post is about an ad for the Library Bar using women who are dressed up like the sexy, smart librarian stereotype.
I swear I picked my tagline about quiet late last night before encountering all these great librarian things to blog about.
Addendum 8/14: LISNews also mentions this ad.

One of the scratchpad’s readers pointed me to this comic with the explicit instructions of looking in the top right corner.
