I just finished reading the profile and really enjoyed it. Tony sounds like a wonderful librarian and person. I hope I get a chance to meet him in person at a conference some day. I especially liked his last quote, because I can relate to it well. "I don't have much of a life except for what I do, but it's a good enough life for me."

Comment on Librarians Aren’t Software Innovators?!? What?!? by Adam Green

I have reread that post and I see statements like "Some of the most interesting blogs I now read are by librarians," and "I now realize that I can find cool software ideas by searching for blogs and websites with the word library in the URL." If these statements can be considered negative, I apologize, but I don't see it. My point, as shown by the question mark at the end of the title and the listing of several examples of innovation in libraries, was that I was seeing that librarians WERE innovators and that this was surprising to me. If my being honest enough to say that I was surprised to find that the common stereotype was wrong is negative, I again apologize. I still think that the line about "running naked through the stacks" was a pretty obvious clue that the post was written in an ironic tone of voice. I don't write with smileys, so I guess that the intended humor could somehow be missed. You have to admit that saying "I'm only kidding guys" was an explicit signal.

So, here is a the most straightforward way to read that post: "Gee, librarians are clearly software innovators. That is surprising to me, but I appreciate what they are saying and doing with the web and software, and therefore I make a point of reading their blogs." Sorry, but that is a pretty boring writing style, even if there is less chance of confusing some readers.

Thanks for the shout out to the Herald. Sorry to toot my 'paper's horn, but one of the Herald's business reporter wrote a column that touched on the future of the newsgathering operation on March 23. In that column Brett Arends discusses the tricky business of moving that newsgathering operation from a largely print product to an online one. See http://business.bostonherald.com/businessNews/view.bg?articleid=131746&format=&page=1

OpenOffice.org comes with a tool called Impress, which is intended as a drop-in replacement for powerpoint, if all you're looking for is that.

Apparently there's also a LaTeX based presentation tool out there.

After that it gets reather geeky. I've seen people use xv, the X11 root window, and in one case pygame (the latter used to explain psyco.)

(All terms above spelled so as to be rapidly findable in wikipedia)

Feed Editor better than Tristana Writer and FeedForAll. I'm using it more than 7 months... I'm highly recommended Feed Editor for making RSS feeds and podcasts.
