Urge Accountability

SAMPLE LETTER TO YOUR CONGRESS MEMBERS:

Dear Representative _______ and Senators ________ and ________:

I call upon you, my elected representatives, to appoint a special prosecutor to conduct a thorough, independent, and public investigation into the role of high-ranking U.S. officials in the abuse and torture of detainees in Guantánamo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and in secret detention facilities throughout the world.

I am deeply disturbed by evidence of the systematic use of torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment against detained persons in the name of the United States, including the outsourcing of torture to other countries. This pattern of abuse “resulted from decisions made by the Bush administration to bend, ignore and cast rules aside.” [1]

Involvement in war crimes must not remain unpunished, no matter what the perpetrator’s rank. Current and former top U.S. officials such as Donald Rumsfeld (former Sec. of Defense), Alberto Gonzalez (former U.S. Attorney General), George Tenet (former Director of the CIA), Porter Goss (former Director of the CIA), Michael Hayden (current Director of the CIA), and Steven Bradbury (acting head of the Office of Legal Counsel, Dep. of Justice), have remained unaccountable for their roles in these crimes. I demand accountability for all public officials, not only for those who actively participate in torture, but also for those who condone, instigate, order, or acquiesce to abuses of detainees.

    The state of American Torture.

Does anybody remember torture? It used to be quite the scandal stateside, as the abuse and misconduct of officials at places like Guantanamo Bay made news, but you don’t hear about it as much anymore. Is that’s because things have taken a turn for the better in Gitmo? After more than a decade, the stories coming out of America’s Cuban military prison focuses more on prisoners’ interest in the next episode of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Airthan in heavy-handed interrogation techniques.

Maybe the shock at hearing from Gitmo—or hearing about its prisoners being treated with anything remotely resembling compassion—has to do with the way we’ve started abiding torture-type techniques a bit too much in our society.

One of those interrogation techniques, waterboarding, has clearly left the confines of the military prison, appearing in the news most recently in connection with a Delaware doctor — ironically an expert in children’s near-death experiences — accused of using the technique on his own young daughter. Earlier, some U.K. burglars allegedly waterboarded their victim.

Maybe part of it is a whitewashing problem: The legal tangles of Gitmo prisoners looking for freedom became unwieldy, as in the case of Abu Zubaydah, who’s never been charged (but whose notoriously long detention went otherwise ignored). But shows like 24, widely seen as glorifying torture, and real-life exposure such as the waterboarding experience at Coney Island, not to mention some journalists’ at-home waterboarding experiments appear to have taken some of the torture-chamber taboo away from the technique.

If you want to get an MD at Harvard, here is what you need to do:

    1. In HS, gt top grades and have some interesting extracurricular activities. It will also help you to get high SAT scores. Take as many AP classes as possible. You are doing all of this so you can go to a top university. It is very difficult to get into a top graduate program (or medical program) if you go to a mediocre college — even with good grades.

    2. Once you get into this prestigious university, you need to do extremely well in your PreMed classes. You can get your BS in any area — but most people going to medical school will get an undergraduate degree in biology or chemistry. Even if you don’t, you still have to take enough classes in those areas to get a major anyway.

    3. In the beginning of your senior year of college, apply to Harvard Medical school. Apply to other schools as well — because even highly qualified students will get turned down at Harvard — though they should be able to get into some medical school.
