Hark Hours Feedback

Hello fellow students,

We are writing to seek feedback about the hours at Harkness Commons and the Hark Box.  Restaurant Associates has been in place for about six months now, and at this point they are looking to potentially make adjustments to their hours to reflect the business that is coming in.  We would like to provide RA with some student feedback about the hours at the Hark.  To help us in our continuing efforts to ensure that your needs are fully voiced, we would appreciate it if you would take the time to briefly answer the following questions.  You can give us your feedback by commenting on this blog post or by emailing us at  studentgov at law.harvard.edu.  Please make every effort to reply by next Tuesday (2/3) so that we can get your feedback in as soon as possible.

As always, we appreciate your input and welcome any comments or question you have.

1)  How do you feel about the current hours at Harkness Commons and the Hark Box (the “Hark Box” is the downstairs area that serves as both the Hark Café and Hark Pub)?

2)  When do you most often eat/drink at Harkness Commons?  The Hark Box?

3)  Do you eat breakfast at the Hark?  Lunch?  Dinner?  For each of those meals do you prefer a quick, pre-packaged meal or something made on the spot?

4)  How early/late do you feel Harkness Commons and the Hark Box need to be open to fulfill your needs?

5)  Do you eat at either facility during the weekends?  If so, when?

Please serve something in between lunch and dinner. (I guess snack time) Sodexho used to serve burgers or pizzas during this period. And I do eat breakfast at the Hark. The breakfast sandwiches are good plus convenient but try to have more choices on breakfast stuff.

I pick up something quick every morning on my way to class for breakfast. (Although here, Restaurant Associates has some trouble keeping stock. They are frequently out of bananas, almost always out of whole wheat bread, and almost always out of skim milk chugs (not the small cartons, but the chugs) The yogurt / fruit section is not nearly as good as Sodexho, and you can’t top your yogurt with granola anymore because RA makes you buy granola by the bowlful rather than by weight).

On the weekends, I sincerely hope they do not cut back the hours. I know the traffic is pretty slow on saturday and sunday mornings, but part of being a restaurant is staying open even when it’s not super busy. I go in on sunday mornings to do some reading and have to wait until 10:30 before I can get a bite or some coffee. It would be nice if they opened up a bit earlier on sundays — but at the very least, they should not open any later.

I’m also a little confused on why we are being asked whether and how often we eat various meals and what we eat. Shouldn’t RA have records that are far more accurate than informal blog comments for all of that? Maybe the student government should just ask to see their records and make sure that RA isn’t doing anything that goes against what the students seem to want.

    2 suggestions/requests:

    1) More food (salad, hot entrees) available between lunch and dinner during the week.

    2) More hot vegetarian options (like Sodexho used to have — things like tofu with vegetables, creamy polenta)

    Thanks!

Hi, I would recommend there to be food on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. It is really one of the best options in the immediate area for those without cars or kitchens, especially with the winter weather.

Definitely having the Hark as an option on the weekend (nights) would be great. At least Sunday night the hark should be open, since a lot of people do work on campus on sundays and if people are away for the weekend, they’re usually back by Sunday night.

Yeah, definitely more weekend hours would be wonderful, more than anything else that would be my first choice. If nothing else, staying open normal weekday hours on Friday, since people have class well into the afternoon and are often looking for a snack or dinner afterward. Also, opening for dinner at 4:30 instead of 5? Those of us who have class from 5 to 7 would be very grateful!

I feel the current hours are insufficient and should be expanded.

    2) When do you most often eat/drink at Harkness Commons? The Hark Box?

    3) Do you eat breakfast at the Hark? Lunch? Dinner? For each of those meals do you prefer a quick, pre-packaged meal or something made on the spot?

I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner and prefer something made quickly on the spot but also like to have the option of a pre-packaged meal.

    4) How early/late do you feel Harkness Commons and the Hark Box need to be open to fulfill your needs?

dinner should be served until at least 8pm in the harkness commons

    5) Do you eat at either facility during the weekends? If so, when?

    yes.

Love the expanded hours from 2:30 – 5. That’s when you need a snack most.

Sorry for the tardiness of my comment, but would love to have the Hark open on weekend nights, including the salad bar and not just snacks. Also, though this is less important than weekend nights, it’d be great to have lunch hour extended till 3 pm. Thank you.
