Typing while listening?: Notes for Day 2 of BloggerCon

October 6th, 2003

I was not at BloggerCon for Day 1 because I was at a library history panel hosted by the Ticknor Society and Harvard’s history of the book seminar. However, I was at Day 2, where I spent most of my day sequestered in Pound 201, enjoying interesting discussions and presentations.

In an attempt to do something different, I brought my laptop and took notes. I have never used my laptop for notetaking so this was an experiment for me. I felt very self conscious, especially since I seemed to be the only non-Mac user at the conference. At any rate, click on the links below to read my notes. I apologize in advance for errors, omissions, and the like. Audio and/or video files may be available in a BloggerCon archive for most sessions. Unfortunately, I do not think that the spirituality session was recorded.

  • Session 1: Birds of a Feather
    • Summary: The BOF neither flocked nor flew, exactly. My notes explain what happened and why.
  • Session 2: Spirituality
    • Summary: AKMA’s Sunday sermon? This was my favorite session of the day. I had hoped to get some ideas for a magazine article I am writing on blogging and Buddhism, but, unfortunately, many of the relevant topics did not get covered. It was a great session, nevertheless. Someone brought up the question of blogging and vows of silence, which is a topic of great interest to me. And AKMA was a very personable and present speaker; he reminded me of many of my favorite priests at the Episcopal churches I attended as a child.
  • Session 3: Community
    • Summary: A packed room, IRC channel on-screen, Joi Ito–need I say more? Joi’s session inspired me to revisit IRC and wikis–formats that I have overlooked and/or abandoned…Oh, and there was stealth disco-ing.
  • Session 4: Fat Man in a Bath Tub

My notes for Saturday’s library history panel (not linked to BloggerCon in any way) are in progress. They should be up by the end of the day. And to all of the people I met who mentioned that they liked my rare book-related posts, I have many rare book posts in progress as well.

    I can’t believe you don’t use a Mac. That’s gotta be tough.

I know. I really wanted a Mac when I bought my laptop (my first computer), but I was talked out of it. Now I regret it, quite a bit. All of the Macs at BloggerCon were fashion-conscious and reasonably well behaved while my computer was noisy, cranky, and not very stylish.

My next computer will probably be a Mac, though–unless I am talked out of it again :-).
