Children’s Literature: Lost in Translation (The Child and the Book Conference 2007)

The Fourth Annual National Centre for Research in Children’s Literature (NCRCL) “The Child and the Book” conference will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, March 30-April 1, 2007. Bogaziçi University’s Department of Western Languages and Literature is hosting the conference, and the conference theme is “Children’s Literature: Lost in Translation”.

The theme encompasses both the literal translation of children’s literature from one language to another and the broader idea of children’s literature crossing cultural, historical and social boundaries.
Conference organizers are currently seeking paper proposals which address the many ways in which children’s literature is translated. They are also inviting general papers on the following topics:

  • Literary theory and children’s literature
  • Gender studies, including masculinist, feminist or queer theory approaches
  • The politics of children’s literature
  • Ideology and/or reader response
  • The voice of the child
  • Popular culture and children’s literature
  • Education and children’s literature
  • Publishing and children’s literature
  • New voices: new trends

Paper proposals are due October 15, 2006.

Visit the 2007 conference website for more information.*

Princeton University Library Research Grants, 2005-2006

Before I became distracted by the recently redesigned Cotsen Children’s Library website, I was writing a post about the Princeton University short-term library research grants. The grants, covering travel and related expenses up to $2,500, are for researchers using rare books and special collections at Princeton University, including the collections of the Cotsen Children’s Library.

The deadline for 2005-2006 grants is January 15, 2005. Complete information, including application forms and lists of past grant recipients, is available on the Friends of the Princeton University Library page.

Navigating Texts and Contexts: SHARP Annual Conference CFP

The call for papers deadline for the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP) annual conference is also November 30. SHARP’s 2005 conference, “Navigating Texts and Contexts”, will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia at Dalhousie University, July 12-13, 2005. As the conference title suggests, the main theme of this conference is the relationship between texts and contexts. Papers and panels will also examine the book trade in the North Atlantic.

Performing Childhood: ChLA Annual Conference CFP

The call for papers deadline for the Children’s Literature Association Annual Conference is November 30. The conference will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 9-12, 2005. The theme for this year’s conference is “Performing Childhood”, an exploration of relationships between children’s literature and performance.

Note: There is a conference weblog, but there is not much to read at the moment; I suspect that posting activity will pick up as the conference nears.
